In fact, 8K content has so far been in short supply, regardless of whether for films or series – unlike video games, here the high resolution has in principle been available for a long time.
Driver downsampling from 4K-UHD
At least on the PC, most of the titles of the past few years already support 8K-UHD, whether by driver downsampling from 4K-UHD or with a native 8K display. With the Ultrasharp UP3218K from Dell there is already such a screen for home use, although so far it is the only one of its kind and is not cheap at around 3,000 euros.
To drive the UP3218K, we contacted the system manufacturer Mifcom and had a high-end computer configured: it is based on a TRX40 board with a 24-core 3960X thread ripper (test), including 64 GB DDR4 RAM and two Titan RTX with 24 GB video memory each – that’s important, more on that later.
In order to maximize the performance of the system, the components were integrated in a Corsair water cooling system. This helps the two graphics cards to operate with a GPU clock with a power target increased to 320 watts just below the 2 GHz limit. With air cooling, the frequencies would be lower and the frame rate in games would decrease, which we wanted to avoid for our 8K benchmarks.
In general, it turned out during the tests that 8K gaming had to have some technical features, because otherwise the speed for 7,680 x 4,320 pixels would not be sufficient or there could be image errors or even crashes.
In addition to a very fast processor, broadly connected PCIe lanes are relevant, but the two graphics cards in SLI mode also require a special connection to each other in order to be able to display modern rendering techniques such as temporal anti-aliasing properly.
